A student at Kennesaw State University in Georgia was fatally shot on campus by an "armed intruder" on Saturday (May 18) afternoon.
"Kennesaw State officials can confirm that a female student was fatally shot on campus," the school said. "A suspect has been detained."
"There is no threat to the campus community. Kennesaw State University Police are working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and we will provide updated information once it becomes available."
The school sent out an alert ordering all students to shelter in place shortly after the shooting, which occurred around 4 p.m.
"KSU Alert: Kennesaw Campus: Armed Intruder reported at Kennesaw State. Seek shelter in a secure location until further notice," the school wrote on X.
About 45 minutes later, officials gave the all-clear.
"KSU Emergency: ALL CLEAR Person was shot on Kennesaw Campus. Suspect is no longer a threat to campus. Avoid the South Campus Housing area due to police activity."
The suspect, who was not a student, was identified as Samuel Harris and is facing charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Authorities have not said what motivated the shooting or if Harris and the victim knew each other.
