OLYMPIA, Wash. -For the first time in 13 years, the U.S. Geological Survey has updated its volcano threat assessments and Washington has two in the top five.
Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier ranked at #2 and #3, respectively, with Hawaii's Kilauea volcano sitting at the top of the list. Alaska's Redoubt Volcano and California's Mount Shasta rounded out the top 5.
"Not surprisingly, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier are in the top 5 volcano threat assessments," Washington's Emergency Management tweeted out. "This doesn't mean either volcano is showing any increased activity. It just means they are active volcanoes in our state."
In fact, Washington and Oregon both had four volcanoes make the list of 18.
