COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -The rhythm of going over the hump and grinding down the rail, it’s an art form.
One that many in the Lake City have been drawn to after the grand opening of the new Coeur d’Alene Skate Park.
"It takes a certain kind of breed to get out there and basically hurt themselves over and over again,” Jason Olsen said.
The bumps and bruises serve as a constant reminder to pick yourself up and get back on the board.
"As time goes on, I think that that kind of breed is more and more evident in our community,” Olsen said.
Olsen is the president of the Coeur d’Alene Skate Park.
He remembers hanging out at the old park 20 years ago, but that old park is a distant memory now.
The new park is a part of the city’s growing plan to expand.
Olsen says the new skate park cost $400,000 to build, and across from it is a newly renovated baseball diamond and playground.
Olsen says the old stereotype of skaters vs. the public is quashed.
They’ve worked together with the city to build the new park.
Olsen says teens have a new spot to come and hang out.
“The youth need a place to gather, especially in this day and age where everything is online, Instagram,” Olsen said, “all this kind of stuff and for them to get outside of the screen and actually come down and meet each other and hangout and just share a vibe together and root each other on."
