SPOKANE, Wash. -Officials in Spokane County have applied for a $16.1 million grant to improve the infrastructure of Geiger Blvd.

With the Amazon fulfillment center going up, and three more large developments planned, officials are preparing for growth and increased traffic in the area.

The BUILD Grant Request would be combined with $28.6 million in project partner committed non-federal funds.

Work would include upgrading Geiger Blvd. from a 2-lane chip seal surface road to a 3-lane asphalt roadway. Other project components include installing pathways to connect residential and STA facilities to new commercial development, signalizing key intersections, upgrading Medical Lake and Grove Road interchanges, and more.

Officials say the Geiger Blvd. improvements would support 3,213 new jobs and 1,353 new residents.

Project partners include Spokane County, WSDOT, Spokane Transit, SRTC, the Spokane International Airport, City of Spokane, and the West Plains Public Development Authority.

They expect to know if the BUILD grant will be approved by the end of October.
