SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -Doctors recently told the Now family that their four-year-old only has weeks left to live. L.J. has been battling cancer since he was two years old. With the dream of growing up to be a helicopter pilot, Fairchild Air Force Base made his dream come true.
"Ever since he learned about helicopters, he's always wanted to be in one and fly in one," Samantha Now, L.J's mother, said.
Now has been by her son's side through the heartbreak of his aggressive form of AML leukemia. Now tells KHQ that her son has a 5% chance survival.
"It's a struggle being in limbo, not knowing how much time you have," Now said.
She said doctors aren't sure how to treat him, since this kind of cancer is so rare
"He actually calls the hospital home." Now said, "we're doing what we can."
But on Friday, Fairchild Air Force Base took his mind off treatments, and let him sit in the driver's seat in one of their helicopters.
"I don't know if he'll come out of the helicopter," Now said.
Now says that doctors told their family to take these next few weeks outside the hospital, to let him be a kid again.
"And next week is a new chapter," Now said.
