COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -An offensive symbol, a swastika, was burned into the grass of the Lake City High School football field.
The Coeur d’Alene School District tells KHQ school officials first observed the damage to the field after graduation, in mid-June.
Because it took time for the grass to fully die, it wasn’t immediately apparent what all of the letters and symbols were. Earlier this month the full extent of this vandalism became obvious, the district said.
In a Facebook post, the district wrote the vandalism was sad and extremely disappointing and that they “do not tolerate acts of hate."
The post continued to say officials would be looking into the vandalism very seriously and that ground crews are actively working to remove it immediately.
The district says they are working with the Coeur d’Alene Police Department and if a student were found to be responsible for this vandalism, that student would be subject to our discipline policies, which could include suspension or expulsion.
