SPOKANE, Wash. -A man was shot and killed early Wednesday morning by a Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy after the Sheriff's Office says he tried to run over the deputy.

Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said in a press briefing that preliminary information shows the suspect tried to run over the deputy after already ramming his patrol car.

Knezovich said the incident began when a woman made contact with a clerk at a convenience store. The Sheriff said the woman appeared beat up and handed the clerk a note. The contents of that note were not released, but the woman left the store and got into a van with a man and drove off.

The van was located by a deputy who tried to pull it over, but the suspect took off and led the deputy on a pursuit.

The suspect drove into the dead end of Hills Court area near 11th and Thor. Knezovich said the suspect turned the van around and rammed the deputy's patrol car, disabling it.

"The deputy stepped out, starting giving commands," Knezovich said. "The vehicle backed up and went straight at the deputy. At that point, the deputy fired and the suspect has been hit and he is deceased."

The woman who was in the van was not hit in the gunfire, but she is in the hospital for treatment and will be giving her statement to detectives.

The deputy was not injured.

The suspect has not yet been identified.
