Man dies from drowning in Spokane River

SPOKANE, Wash. -A man has died from drowning in the Spokane River Sunday afternoon.

Around 1 p.m., Spokane Fire crews and a water rescue team responded to a call from a witness, who saw a man struggling to swim in the river near Upriver Dr. and Havana St.

Rescuers pulled the man from the water around 1:36 p.m. and began lifesaving measures including CPR. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Joshua Laiva of the Spokane Police Department.

Fire crews say the man was submerged for about 30 minutes. Some witnesses on the scene tried to help but couldn't get him before he went underwater.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of death will be released by the Spokane Medical Examiner’s Office once proper notifications have been made to the family of the deceased.
