Inmate dies in the Spokane County Jail

Spokane County Major Crimes Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate that happened Wednesday night in the Spokane County Jail.

The Sheriff's Office says jail staff told a responding deputy that just after 8:30 pm, a Corrections Officer entered a cell to accommodate an inmate's request to move to another room because his roommate was acting "crazy." As the inmate began to move, the Corrections Officer noticed the other inmate in the cell, lying face down on his bunk, motionless. The Officer immediately called for assistance, but despite efforts by medical staff, the inmate was pronounced dead.

Detectives were called to the scene to investigate.

"Preliminary information gained during the investigation indicates the inmate may have experienced a medical emergency but nothing at this early stage of the investigation has been ruled out," the Sheriff's Office said in a release on Thursday. "The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an investigation into the inmate’s cause and manner of death, which depending on possible testing and toxicology, could take several weeks/months.  They will also release the male’s name at a later time when appropriate to do so."
