Jury sentences Renfro to death for murder of Sgt. Greg Moore

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -A jury has sentenced Jonathan Renfro to death in the 2015 murder of Coeur d'Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore. 

The jury announced the verdict Saturday morning just hours after the final phase of his trial ended. During that final stage, Renfro took the stand in his defense for the first time. He apologized to Moore's family for his actions.

Renfro was found guilty of the murder last month.

Moore was shot while investigating suspicious activity in the 2800 block of Wilbur Avenue on May 5, 2015. Sgt. Moore contacted a man walking in the neighborhood at around 1:20 a.m.Sgt. Moore radioed suspect Jonathan Renfro's information to dispatch and was not heard from again. Moore later died from his injuries. Renfro's driver's license was found in Sgt. Moore's possession at the hospital. 

Renfro admitted to the shooting repeatedly according to a police affidavit.

The jury in the mitigation phase found  the defense's mitigation in three main factors did not suffice for Renfro to receive life without parole.

The next step in the process is an actual sentencing hearing, which will take place Monday afternoon.
