Two hospitalized in DUI rollover south of Newport

emergency lights and road Washington State Patrol says two people were taken to the hospital after a rollover crash Tuesday morning.

It happened just before 11 a.m. on Highway 2, south of Newport, Washington. 

Investigators say Matthew C. Nielsen, 45, of East Hartland, Connecticut, and his passenger, 54-year-old Joey M. Hawkins, of Newport, Washington, were southbound on Highway 2 just south of Scotia road when Nielsen suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

Hawkins tried to help the driver keep his Volvo XC70 on the road, but lost control and left the road on the southbound shoulder. The vehicle rolled several times and came to rest facing northbound on the southbound shoulder. Hawkins, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and taken to an area hospital. Nielsen was also hospitalized.

Troopers later arrested Nielsen for DUI.
