SPOKANE, Wash. -The Spokane Police Department released the names of the three officers who were involved in a fatal shooting at the Shadle Park Walmart last week.
Following a reported carjacking near Crestline and Lincoln, in which a person was shot twice, police located the stolen car in the parking lot of the Walmart. They called in more resources and set up surveillance on the car and noticed several people in and out of the car while waiting for backup. At one point the vehicle started to move and the officers moved in on the car, blocking it.
Sergeant Brian Eckersley was not involved in the deadly force but did use his vehicle to block the suspect vehicle in the parking lot.
Chief Craig Meidl told KHQ that the passenger in the vehicle got out of car, but the driver did not.
Officer Darrell Quarles and Officer Ryan Smith were identified as the officers who fired their weapons and killed 34-year-old Chad Cochell.
Chief Meidl says body camera footage will be available for the investigation.
The man who was killed was identified two days after the shooting as 34-year-old Chad Cochell. The cause of death was listed as "rifle and shotgun wounds to the chest and upper extremities."
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team is handling the investigation and interviewing the officers involved to determine exactly what happened.
