Spokane Mayor David Condon held a press conference Wednesday to announce the appointment of Brian Schaeffer as Spokane's next Fire Chief.

Schaeffer took over as interim Chief in January following the retirement of former Chief Bobby Williams.

Schaeffer was one of five finalists selected by a committee of community members, city administration and fire department staff.

The candidates were interviewed by three panels consisting of community and civic leaders, fire representatives, and City Council members.

Schaeffer has been with the Spokane Fire Department since 2005. He will go before the Spokane City Council for confirmation on June 5th. His salary is expected to be between $145,846 and $179,192.

Williams, who had been with the department since 1988, made more than $175,000 which topped the City of Spokane employee payroll.
