SPOKANE, Wash. -Freeman strong. It's been just past a year since a young man opened fire in Freeman High School, killing one student and injuring three others.
In that time, students and staff have come a long way in healing and today was another step in that direction.
Today, students worked to give back. The student leaders of Freeman have spent the week remembering their classmate, Sam Strahan in a positive way. They decided to give out care packages to the community they love.
"We wanted to do something to remember him, so we thought what better than to give back to our community," Elliette Clark, ASB secretary said.
Students have worked over the last week putting together bags for homeless men, women and families.
Clark said the elementary kids decorated the bags, the middle schoolers donated food and water and the high schoolers packed it up with toothbrushes and toothpaste.
"We put together the bags on Thursday, which is the year mark of when we lost Sam at our school," Clark said.
So instead of starting in class, on Wednesday, Freeman High School students started in Downtown Spokane.
Their first stop, Union Gospel Mission.
"Our goal was 500 bags, and we put together 808," Clark said.
Clark says they were overwhelmed with how many donations came in, so they decided to spread the love.
The high schoolers went on to three other shelters around Spokane, all with the memory, of their friend Sam.
