SPOKANE, Wash. -A fleeing driver with a felony warrant crashed his car shortly after Spokane County Sheriff's Office Deputies terminated pursuit, and was later detained after receiving medical treatment.
Late Friday night/early Saturday morning, a deputy observed a Honda Accord on Hayford Rd. that was later determined to have license plates registered to another vehicle, meaning it was possibly stolen.
The driver of the Honda, later determined to be 28-year-old Derick Shropshire, pulled a U-turn after a deputy activated his emergency lights and began fleeing onto Hwy 2. Because of the recklessness of the flee, the pursuit was terminated.
Another deputy who had pulled over after the pursuit was called off, observed the Honda speeding towards his direction. Shropshire didn't slow down approaching an intersection, ran through a stop sign and into an RV Park where he crashed into some bushes/trees next to a building. Shropshire then fled on foot.
Additional officers arrived in the area and set a perimeter issuing K9 announcements. Moments later, a witness said he observed Shropshire running across the bridge on I-90, and he was detained.
A check of Shopshire's name revealed an active felony warrant (Theft 1st Degree) for his arrest. Shopshire said he was having trouble breathing after being advised he was under arrest, and medics evaluated him before transporting him to a hospital. Multiple knives and used syringes were located in his pockets during a search.
Shopshire showed signs of a possible overdose during the transport. Shropshire yelled profanities and thrashed around then spit blood on a deputy and hospital staff, adding to his charges.
Once medically cleared, he was booked into Spokane County Jail for Attempting to Elude a Police Vehicle, Assault 3rd Degree (2 counts), Assault 4th Degree and the felony warrant.
Washington State Patrol and Airway Heights Police Officers assisted with the arrest.
