Several Spokane firefighters accused of bullying and harassment

Several Spokane firefighters are under investigation for bullying and harassment, according to the City of Spokane.

According to a lengthy report conducted by the city’s human resources department, a lieutenant within the department alleged a pattern of abuse at Fire Station 2. The lieutenant stated the pattern of abuse has gone on for three to five years.

The report also states that some of the employees were given demeaning nicknames and that members of Fire Station 2 create a hazing type environment.

The city tells KHQ the next step includes Loudermill hearings for five members of Station 2.

Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer released the following statement:

“We take these allegations very seriously, that’s why we launched a thorough and complete investigative process which has not yet been completed. As a city, we have taken steps to make sure people have multiple ways to report concerns about work place behavior and are comfortable coming forward with those concerns. The actions and behavior outlined in this report will not be tolerated. Any disciplinary actions will be taken once the investigative process is complete.”

This is a developing story.
