The Internet is being praised as the greatest invention of the past century. The adventure into cyberspace is the runaway choice in a new Heart+Mind Strategies poll, with 41-percent saying it's had "the most profoundly beneficial impact on their quality of life." By comparison, a related item -- the laptop or personal computer -- ranks second, with nods from just 18-percent. Thirteen-percent believe smart phones have made the biggest difference. None of the other options in the survey received even ten-percent of the vote. At six-percent each, the microwave and color television round out the top five.
The survey results also showed an age-related trend. Inventions introduced when a person is a teenager or young adult tend to leave the greatest impressions, while people tend to take for granted the inventions that have been around their entire lives.
